A Police Lieutenant (Staff Lieutenant) oversees the Staff Services Unit and reports to the Support Services Commander. Responsibilities include planning, scheduling and supervising special events, handling human resources related tasks (scheduling interviews, background investigations, etc.) and supervising the Crime Safety Officer (CSO) program.
The Staff Lieutenant is aided by a Staff Officer who is responsible for event support and investigations related to the staff services functions and special investigations as assigned. Campus Safety Officer (CSO) Program
The Campus Safety Officer (CSO) Program, which is also overseen by the Staff Lieutenant, consists of part-time civilian employees, many of whom are MU students. CSOs fall under the Events Staff title and are required to work certain special events throughout the year. However, in accordance with university regulations, they are not permitted to work more than 28 hours per week. The number of CSOs employed by the department varies throughout the year.
CSOs serve the university community by assisting in the mission, goals and objectives of MUPD. Duties include providing security and traffic direction for campus events (sporting events, concerts and more) and providing overnight security for residence halls. CSOs have multiple responsibilities and report to a CSO Squad Leader. CSOs build useful skills in leadership, public relations and communications. Hours are flexible and allow for student employees to work around class schedules and exams.

Communications & Records
A civilian Senior Office Support Assistant supervises the Communications and Records Units and reports directly to the Support Services Commander. Functional responsibilities include staffing and scheduling Communications/Records personnel and performing Communications/Records duties.
Communications
Communications is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by Communications Operators, who are full-time civilian personnel. While on duty, the shift commander directly supervises the Communications Operators. The Communications/Records Supervisor is responsible for scheduling, training and other administrative management of Communications Operators.
Responsibilities of a Communications Operator include communicating via radio with patrol officers, security officers and CSOs for emergency and non-emergency police services; using computer and teletype operations for criminal justice information; answering telephone calls; serving walk-in customers; and accessing police computer software for entry and retrieval of information for patrol shift operations. Communications Operators also work in the Records Unit, and all Communications Operators must have Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) and Association of Public Communication Officials (APCO) certification.
Communications Operators are often the first contact a person makes with MUPD. Therefore, professionalism is important. A Communications Operator’s ability to remain calm and professional during periods of intense stress is essential to completing their duties and ensuring the safety of all patrol personnel.

Property
The Property Administrator is a civilian employee who reports directly to the Support Services Commander. The Property Administrator’s functional responsibilities are tracking and maintaining evidence, safekeeping, and lost and found property.
Lost and Found
The University Police Department is the central repository for lost and found items on the Mizzou campus. Each year, our Property Administrator fields over 1000 calls for lost items. Found items are received almost daily from various buildings, departments and individuals throughout campus. We make every effort to identify and contact the owner of all property that has been turned in to us.
Our efforts are guided by policy and procedure for the University of Missouri campus (see: The Business Policy and Procedure Manual 6:100). All items turned in to Lost and Found are kept for at least sixty days. After the sixty-day period, all sellable items are sent to University Surplus Property where they are sold at auction.
Lost Items: Most buildings on campus have a temporary lost and found storage where they retain items until they are brought to MUPD. If you have lost an item, retrace your steps and check with administration at the buildings near or where you lost the item(s). If you cannot locate your property, email Lost/Found Department or call (573) 882-7207. You can also submit a Lost/Found Item report . Be prepared to provide your name, contact information, property description and location where you lost your property.
Found Items: If you have found property and feel comfortable returning it to the owner, please do so. Otherwise, complete a Lost/Found Item report or bring the property MU Police Department. If you bring the item to MUPD, be sure to attach a note listing the date and location where the property was found.
NOTE: there are some items we cannot accept. For a complete list of these items, click here.
If you have items in bulk or more than just a few items, drop them off during lost and found hours.
