Crime Awareness:

The University of Missouri Police Department has received reports of seven catalytic converters being stolen from vehicles. These thefts are believed to have occurred between the evening of March 3 and noon March 4 in various parking lots around the university. To steal a catalytic converter, the suspects(s) typically get underneath the vehicle and use a cutting tool.

Anyone seen loitering in a parking lot, wandering in a parking lot, or weaving between vehicles and looking in or at multiple vehicles could indicate suspicious activity. If someone is seen in a parking lot with tools (particularly cutting tools) and/or if someone is seen getting under a vehicle in a parking lot, the police should be called to investigate the incident.

MUPD asks that faculty, staff and students check their vehicle for potential thefts. MUPD can be reached at 573-882-7201. If a crime is in progress please call 9-1-1.

Additional information is not available due to the ongoing investigation and nature of the offense.

Anyone with any information about the thefts is requested to contact Sergeant Shawn Spalding at (573) 882-5928 or CRIME STOPPERS at (573) 875-8477. Individuals also may submit tips online at 875tips.com. Individuals may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,500 if the information leads to an arrest.
